RUSTY REBELS vs. DUSTY CLEATS
Game # 12 July 5, 2007
Rebels lose 11-7
2007 Record 7-5-0
Keogh Park-Thursday evening was warm and humid; earlier in the day there had been a threat of thunderstorms. The home team Rebels had not played in a week, and surely some of the Rebels were still thinking about the crushing 18-5 defeat to the Saints the past Thursday. This was the Rebels first game of July...
The Dusty Cleats drew first blood in the game, scoring 2 runs in the first inning, but the Rebels evened the score, the in the bottom of the second. The Rebels and Cleats exchanged runs over the next couple of innings, but in the fifth inning, the wheels fell off for the Rebels and the Dusty Cleats struck for a 7 run inning, capped off with a monstrous, towering home run over the center field fence into the tennis courts, scoring the 7th run from second base. The Rebels played good defense in the game, but the Cleats managed to hit the baseball right spots. The Rebels bats started slow, with Pully (the Cleats pitcher) throwing pitches with a lot of backspin. It took a couple of innings for the Rebels to adjust, but they started to make good contact, the only problem was... the balls were finding the gloves of the Cleats defense...
The Rebels played a decent game on Thursday evening, but seemed to just miss on the big hit or inning. The loss on Thursday was the third loss in a row, and the fourth in five games for the Rebels. Perhaps the Rebels have become a little bit complacent with such a great start to the season and have lost that edge that was there when winning games. Perhaps these are the Dog Days of Summer and teams have a tendency to relax when there is nothing to play for. The Rebels are playing in a tournament this weekend, July 7 and 8 at Coventry Park, maybe this is just the thing to spark the team, rejuvenate the intensity with something to play for, and to right this rudderless ship back in the right direction. REBELS REDIRECT!!!!
Highlights of the Game: Paul H. playing second base, knocked down a ball, tumbled and stumbled and managed to crawl on his hands and knees to second base to force an out; Glen G. was hitting the ball very well; Dusty Cleats batter (????) hit a monstrous home run over the center field fence; Tony M. made a nice running catch in the field.
Side Notes: The Rebels played six games in the month of June, with record of 3-3-0, Rebels scored 63 runs with an average of 10.5 runs per game and allowed 66 runs against with an average of 11.0 runs per game.
